This philanthropic day was created by Herbert Birch Kingston in 1922 as a means of distributing a bit of happiness to the downtrodden during the Great Depression. Kingston, a candy company employee, gave candy and treats to orphans, shut-ins and others who had seemingly been forgotten. Today, we observe this day by bringing surprises to those in hospitals, shelters or nursing homes.
