Showcase – Summer Hydrangea Designs

The summertime gives us many opportunities to decorate with seasonal flowers, popular year after year for their beauty. One of these favorites is the hydrangea – which although available year-round from growers, naturally blooms from late spring to early fall. This flower is well-known for its generous, lush flower head and gorgeous color palettes, and it is used most often as a base or backdrop for mixed floral arrangements. However, this year, Marco Island Florist Home & Gifts would like to shine a feature spotlight on the hydrangea, and recommend that you bring home a few stems to display on their own. You’ll love how they add the ambiance of a summer day to your home decor.

Hydrangea flowers are lavish and full, and as such make the ideal addition to virtually any other floral arrangement. Hydrangea are most often seen in shades of blue, purple and pink, although due to hybridization, maturity, and variations in light, are also seen in white or green.

The pink and blue colors are not determined by the variety of flower, but by the pH balance in the soil – acidic soil produces deep blue or violet blooms, while alkaline soil produces pink flowers. All hydrangea petals will begin to turn green as they mature, often resulting in beautiful multi-colored blossoms.

Here in Florida, we always need to be aware of the water levels – in ourselves, and in our flowers! But hydrangea are particularly susceptible to feeling dehydrated, and because of this will begin to wilt quickly if they do not have enough water. However, they can be easily revived, either by adding more fresh water, or by submerging the flowers completely in water until they return to all their beautiful glory.
