International Women’s Day, observed on March 8^th, is an awareness initiative targeted at strategically achieving equality and justice for women globally. The day was first celebrated in 1910, but attained its most significant recognition in 1977, when the United Nations extended sanction and support. Each year a theme is chosen to represent some of the struggles women face across the world, from combatting poverty, to gaining education equality, to addressing violence towards women. This year is a call to action, with the theme Be Bold For Change challenging men and women everywhere to do their part. 

Even though the day is only officially recognized in 30 nations, there are gatherings in over 100 countries annually – with official events taking place in 21 of them. In the United States, interested participants can find events in 33 cities, ranging from speeches and gala dinners to career fairs and concerts. This year, those who do not live close to an event can join online global forums expected to draw millions. The organizers of International Women’s Day recognize that there is no one country, no one government, no one corporation, or o one group that effectively address the challenges women face, but it is instead a collaborative effort we can all join together.
